In April-May 2023, BRGM reinforced its cooperation with Kazakhstan on two fronts: it signed a framework agreement with the Kazakh Geological Committee and undertook an FSPI project on water resource management.

BRGM representatives were in Astana, Kazakhstan in May 2023, on the occasion of the official visit of Olivier Becht, Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade, Economic Attractiveness and French Nationals Abroad, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

A framework agreement with the Kazakh Geological Committee

During this visit, a framework agreement was signed between BRGM and the Geology Committee of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of Kazakhstan, in the presence of Olivier Becht and Marat Karabaiev, Kazakh Minister for Industry and Infrastructure Development.

The framework agreement will enable the development of new cooperation and the positioning of French expertise in geoscience with respect to:

  • water resources,
  • mineral resources, critical substances, strategic materials,
  • scientific databases,
  • the environment, polluted sites and soils.

A project on water management

A project in the field of water resources management was also officially launched on 18 April 2023 with the organisation of a first working seminar in Astana, Kazakhstan. The project aims to promote French expertise in water and to open up new possibilities for collaboration to better understand and manage the country's water resources, a priority issue in the region in the context of climate change.

This project benefits from French bilateral funding (FSPI - Solidarity fund for innovative projects, civil societies, French-speaking communities and human development).

A new internationalisation strategy for BRGM

The water management project undertaken in Kazakhstan is the first of several promising projects in other geographical sectors, supported by French diplomatic funding. It reinforces BRGM's new internationalisation strategy based on the construction of an in-depth, multi-thematic, one-to-one approach to respond directly to the priority issues of partner countries.

This approach demonstrates the success of the monitoring by BRGM of changes in policies, international priorities and the mechanisms of the main stakeholders, who can sponsor beneficial bilateral cooperation, in order to promote the institution abroad.
