The French geological reference database (RGF) is a national programme for acquiring and managing geological data, designed by BRGM. Its purpose is to deliver homogeneous and coherent geological information in 3D and digital form covering the whole of France.

In order to extend the1:50,000 geological map of France, the RGF is seeking to make the transition from two-dimensional scientific information to a multi-scale representation of geological knowledge of France encompassing three dimensions, or even four including the dimension of time.
