The aim of the “Mineral Resources” 2022 workshop is to bring together various players from the world of research, public institutions and industry to discuss issues concerning the responsible and sustainable supply of metals and materials to French industrial sectors, particularly those linked to the ecological transition.

The goal of this course will be to present the different prerequisites for implementing the sustainable and responsible management of mineral resources in the service of French and European sovereignty and to secure supply lines for strategic industrial sectors.

The school will be hosted on the Orléans Geosciences campus and will be jointly organised by CNRS-INSU, BRGM and the University of Orléans. It will be possible to participate online in webinar mode.

The format of the workshop will ensure the promotion of research among young people, based on interdisciplinarity. The training course will provide participants with basic knowledge and standardised terminology, which is essential for developing an interdisciplinary community.

Mineral resources: responsible sourcing and transitions

The theme of responsible sourcing and transitions will be the focus of joint interdisciplinary brainstorming to find the best ways of supporting energy and digital transitions.

4 thematic sessions

The programme will be divided into 4 sessions (14-16 November 2022):

  • Sovereignty and supply potential for industrial sectors,
  • New prospecting and exploitation techniques,
  • The role of basic research in defining new prospecting guidelines,
  • Environmental impact management (life-cycle analysis (LCA), remediation and post-mining activities).

Technical visits and workshops

Participants attending in person will be invited to go on visits and take part in technical workshops at the BRGM and ISTO technological platforms (15 and 16 November):

  • Demonstration of treatment of ore and secondary resources at BRGM's Plat'Inn pilot hall
  • ISTO experimental platform (reactive transport and HP-HT autoclaves)
  • National geotheque (BRGM) with observation of mineralised cores

Two field trips

At the end of the course, two optional field trips will be offered:

  • a visit to a quarry in the Beauce (16 November),
  • a field trip to the Massif Central (17 November).

Two poster sessions

The days of 14 and 15 November will end with an aperitif around the posters that participants can bring at no extra cost. Abstracts should be sent before 15 September 2022 to the email below.
