Droughts affect parts of France every year. Their spatial extent and duration have increased, as can be seen in the Pyrénées Orientales.

The symposium on the "Social and economic impacts of drought" is being held as part of the 21st International Weather and Climate Forum. Its aim is to shed light on how different types of drought are evolving, their consequences and impact on biodiversity, but also how they are exacerbated by human activities.

The programme is organised by "environmental compartment", i.e. by soils, lakes & rivers and aquifers, because the corresponding dynamics and socio-economic activities differ. The seminar will conclude with an overview of the fields of multidisciplinary studies on current droughts.

The symposium is intended in particular for socio-economic and regional players, scientists, journalists, representatives of think-tanks, NGOs, professional associations and students.

BRGM's contributions to the session on "Groundwater droughts"

Groundwater is widely used for drinking water, due to its quality and accessibility. It is also used for many industrial and agricultural activities, but is being affected by climate change, basin development and abstraction.
