The MACLE-CVL platform for Microscopy, Imaging and Analytic Resources in Centre-Val de Loire is the result of a project by the regional scientific community to found a centre of excellence pooling extensive equipment with scientific and technical expertise.

An installed base of new-generation instruments worth almost €5.5 million

Located on the Orléans-La Source campus, the MACLE-CVL platform is equipped with a range of new-generation instruments worth almost €5.5 million, acquired with the support of the French State, the Centre-Val de Loire Region and the European Union (through the ERDF) as part of the 2015-2020 State-Region planning contract (CPER). This equipment includes:

  • an ultra-high resolution transmission electron microscope for studying all types of materials on an atomic scale,
  • a scanning electron microscope combining high-resolution imaging with the chemical and crystallographic analysis of sample surfaces, including hydrated samples,
  • an electron microprobe able to determine the chemical composition of materials and to detect a full range of elements from beryllium to uranium.

Through the instruments available on the MACLE platform, users can, for example, observe samples under extreme conditions of pressure or temperature in order to identify the physical properties that set them apart, and to develop new materials of optimised performance. The MACLE-CVL platform provides answers in the fields of earth sciences, materials science, life sciences and human sciences. It is intended to provide a range of high value-added services to academic research laboratories as well as to economic players who do not normally have access to this type of infrastructure, primarily to gather chemical and structural information on manufactured or natural materials.
