Critical metals are essential for speeding up the energy and industrial transition in all areas, in order to achieve the global objective of limiting global warming to less than 2°C. Faced with growing demand for mineral raw materials, BRGM is continuing to support French diplomacy on mineral resource issues, in conjunction with the inter-ministerial delegation for the supply of strategic minerals and metals (DIAMMS - Délégation Interministérielle aux Approvisionnements en Minerais et Métaux Stratégiques) and the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

During its participation in the ‘Investing in African Mining Indaba’, the annual international conference on mining investment in Africa, held in Cape Town, South Africa, in February 2024, the French geological survey signed two cooperation agreements, with Angola and Zambia.

Through these partnerships, BRGM is strengthening its commitment to the energy transition by contributing to the development of responsible mining activities in southern Africa.

The two agreements were signed in the presence of Benjamin Gallezot, inter-ministerial delegate for the supply of strategic minerals and metals.

In the presence of the Minister of Mines, Oil and Gas, BRGM and the Angola geological survey (IGEO) have signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen their partnership, with a priority focus on minerals for the energy transition.

The objectives are:

  • the exploration and development of mineral resources needed for the energy transition,
  • institutional support and training for Angolan experts,
  • the sovereign tasks of a national geological survey, such as information systems, laboratories, natural hazards, etc.

An agreement between BRGM and the Zambian Ministry of Mines

BRGM has signed an agreement with the Zambian Ministry of Mines in the field of strategic minerals, with the aim of:

  • enhancing the skills of geological department staff involved in the acquisition of geological data, the exploration of mineral resources and the evaluation of exploration and mining activities carried out by exploration companies in Zambia,
  • making Zambia a more attractive place to mine by improving the management of existing geological data and promoting it to mining investors.
