    Your challenges and needs

Your country faces multiple natural and technological hazards, and the effects of climate change make it even more crucial to organize awareness raising and prevention efforts among both citizens and the socio-economic sector to minimize impacts.

You are faced with the following challenges:

    • Develop prevention and risk culture based on reliable scientific information,
    • Implement an operational solution to gather, manage, and disseminate risk information,
    • Collect and centralize risk data from producing organizations (seismicity, flooding, landslides, etc.  ), harmonize, store, and distribute it...
    • Map risks from local to national levels, associating regulatory information,
    • Facilitate resilient land use planning and support decision-making in urban planning and infrastructure siting,
    • Define the national governance of the operation to ensure the solution’s sustainability: roles and responsibilities of stakeholders (commissioning party, project manager, data producers), code of good practices, data policy...

    Our added value

BRGM, alongside the ministry in charge of Ecological transition, has designed the organizational framework deployed nationally to collect, integrate, update, and provide in real time data from various French public organizations, both regional and national. It is the designer, manager, and operator of GéoRisques and its developments.

BRGM has the full range of expertise to support you at every stage of your project.

It offers various methodological and operational assistance missions aligned with your needs and specific risks (natural or technological), ranging from consultative studies to the implementation of a GIS platform and/or an integrated web dissemination portal such as GéoRisques.

    • Identify the availability of thematic data locally,
    • Assess their quality, consistency, completeness,
    • Provide recommendations regarding their standardization and geographic compatibility,
    • Help align the practices of data producers, particularly in terms of data description (metadata concept),
    • Propose solutions for data harvesting and import.
    • Propose a functional architecture, guide technological and software choices,
    • Design the workflow for data integration, processing, banking, management, and hosting,
    • Develop an operational deployment roadmap.
    • Extract and format data according to use cases from citizens to business,
    • Define textual and cartographic visualizations of the information,
    • Enable an interactive multi-risk, multi-scale cartographic viewer,
    • Propose a risk exposure zoning aligned with regulatory requirements.
    • Provide a multi-risk catalog to facilitate information search,
    • Provide summary sheets on natural and/or technological hazards at different scales,
    • Offer platform features aligned with use cases to be defined,
    • Suggest differentiated user journeys according to the target audiences.
    • Provide data exploitation services for decision support purposes,
    • Generate automated risk reports at various scales,
    • Make data available to enable reuse and exploitation in the socio-economic sector (API, web services, pivot formats).

GéoRisques: the all-audience reference platform to promote a culture of resilience

The GéoRisques portal allows users to assess their exposure to major risks across French territory.

Operated by BRGM on behalf of the French Ministry in charge of Ecological transition, GéoRisques centralizes information from more than 30 different databases: several come directly from BRGM, others originate from specialized national or regional institutions. The challenge is to provide a national, cross-sectoral, and multi-risk vision through a single information system, thus offering a technical and organizational framework to collect heterogeneous data produced by various providers and at different scales.

GéoRisques is aimed at three groups:

    • Citizens, among whom to develop a culture of risk and to meet regulatory obligations (such as informing buyers and tenants about major risks).
    • Local authorities, to communicate with their residents, fulfill their preventive obligations, and disseminate the DICRIM (Municipal Information Document on Major Risks, for example).
    • The socio-economic sector, private sector, insurance, real estate, consulting firms, and other developers, to utilize the data within their internal tools in line with the state’s commitment to making institutional data available.

Due to longstanding and recognized expertise in database management, BRGM has been the technical operator of the project since its inception.

Vigirisks: the all-in-one predictive platform for natural hazards

Vigirisks is a scientific service platform facilitating the provision, traceability, and execution of calculations, processing, and modeling in the field of natural hazard risk.

In response to increasing external demands for predictive risk scenarios, BRGM developed Vigirisks, an aggregator tool that leverages its expertise and effectively meets the needs for hazard modeling/simulation and vulnerability assessment of territories and infrastructures to better address socio-economic challenges.

ThinkHazard: a general overview of the natural hazards present in a given geographic area

ThinkHazard is a free, easy-to-use, open-source tool that helps project planners identify natural hazards in their project area and understand how to reduce them.

Developed at the request of the World Bank (Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery), ThinkHazard aims to provide global information on risks and recommendations for several types of hazards (earthquake, flood, drought, volcanic ash, cyclone, tsunami, storm surge, and landslide).
