During the Fête de la science 2025, BRGM offered children an amusing activity: personalising their pet rock. It was also an opportunity to learn where rocks come from, what makes them special and how they are used in our everyday lives.
To extend this activity, BRGM has now produced an educational booklet designed for children. Much more than just a guidebook, it gives youngsters a better understanding of the rock (which the very young are encouraged to treat like a pet), while learning about the Earth sciences and geology in the process.
Discover geology with your Pet Rock
The booklet contains all the essential information about each Pet Rock: its rock type, composition, formation, appearance and history. It also explains how these rocks are used in everyday life, whether for construction, paving or art.
Ideal for teachers and families alike, The booklet invites children to observe their Pet Rock, discover its special features and understand its history. Each page makes geology and science more accessible and captivating for children, while arousing their curiosity.
What is a Pet Rock?
Making a Pet Rock couldn't be easier!
Choose a beautiful pebble and get hold of some paint, felt pens and accessories to stick on it (fake eyes, felt, pompoms, wool, etc.). Wash and dry your pebble, and start creating.
You can personalise your pebble in any way you like, to form a face, an animal or even a plant.
