On 2 October 2024, Ghislaine Verrhiest-Leblanc, Director General of the French Association for the Prevention of Natural and Technological Disasters (AFPCNT), and Christophe Poinssot, Deputy Director General and Scientific Director of BRGM, signed a framework agreement designed to strengthen a long-term partnership in their respective areas of expertise, on topics of common interest.
The two organisations wish to cooperate on projects concerning the prevention of major risks, the development of a risk culture and the improvement of the resilience of French regions, for which their skills, actions and expertise are proving to be complementary.
Preventing natural and technological risks
The natural hazard risk-prevention policy covers a wide range of phenomena that sometimes have serious consequences, and draws on many disciplines: geology, hydrology, geotechnics, hydrogeology, hydraulics, geophysics, geomorphology, civil engineering, geography, climatology, oceanography, seismology, human and social sciences, etc. Preparing for these natural hazards requires an equally wide range of operational skills in the field.
Similarly, the potential technological risks associated with the ground and subsurface, cover areas as varied as mining risks, geothermal energy, underground storage and more.
The agreement between AFPCNT and BRGM, which sets out the framework for joint projects and future exchanges in knowledge production, is valid for two years.
