Underground cavities, landslides, frequent flooding, polluted sites and soils and forest fires are just some of the natural hazards and anthropic risks that can affect people and their homes. To identify the areas most at risk, the Ministry of Ecological Transition and BRGM created a portal ten years ago to centralise all useful information: Georisques.gouv.fr.
The digital portal hase been updated many times and centralises information from more than 30 different databases: several come directly from the French geological survey, others come from French Départements, and still others have been compiled by the State and insurers within the Observatoire national des risques naturels. Given its long-standing reputation for its expertise in database management, BRGM's Digital Division has been the technical operator of the project since its inception.
Knowing the risks in all areas of France
Georisques.gouv.fr aims to make it easier for users to find the information they need about risks in all or part of France, by providing free public access. The "Know the risks near me" report presents a simplified summary of the various risks associated with a given address, and offers the possibility of obtaining more details on each risk.
The site also features a mapping tool that enables users to find out about known hazards in any part of France. It is used in particular by real-estate professionals to find information on the risk of clay shrinkage and swelling, about which buyers are now obliged to inform purchasers. In addition, property sellers and lessors now include Georisques.gouv.fr in their adverts, so that buyers can find out about natural and technological risks before any transaction. Finally, APIs enable professionals to re-use the vast quantity of data available.
The number of visits to the website has increased significantly since its launch: from 250 per day in 2014, it now averages more than 18,000 per day. Every day, visitors consult over 90,000 pages and generate around 10,000 risk reports.
