The agreement signed on 24 February by Catherine Lagneau, Chair and CEO of BRGM, and Benoit Vallet, Director General of ANSES, will provide a framework for future joint research and expert appraisals in the field of chemical and biological quality of water and soil, with a view to improving control of the corresponding health risks.

The agreement, signed at the Paris International Agricultural Show, marks a key stage in the strengthening of collaboration between the two institutions. The aim is to combine their respective skills and know-how to meet the challenges of water and soil quality and better control the corresponding health risks. The expertise of ANSES and BRGM is particularly complementary when studying the chemistry and microbiology of water and soil, and processing and disseminating data.

A partnership focused on the interface between the environment and health

The two organisations will focus their joint efforts on several key areas for water quality, including:

  • Research:  with the support of ANSES's Hydrology Laboratory in Nancy, joint efforts will focus on the management of water resources, the reuse of waste water and the transfer of contaminants between soil and groundwater. The partnership will in particular lead to the development of innovative chemical analysis methods for emerging micropollutants in water (pesticides, PFAS, 1,4-dioxane, etc.) and the pooling of technical resources, such as for high-resolution mass spectrometry. In microbiology, joint projects will be developed to study microbial populations in water environments, their biodiversity and their impact on aquifers.
  • Phyto pharmacovigilance: BRGM will provide support to ANSES under the arrangement, using data relating to groundwater and assisting with the analysis of reports relating to plant protection products.
  • Data processing and dissemination: the partners will be developing data management tools to facilitate decision-making and the dissemination of knowledge.

The agreement has been signed for a period of five years and may be renewed.
