In 2015, the Minister for mining launched studies to define what mining means in France.

A working group of institutional, industrial and civil society representatives, including the BRGM, produced a state-of-the-art review on non-energy mineral explorations and extraction operations in France that comply with sustainable development principles.

A state-of-the-art review to provide input for discussions on non-energy mining projects

This 700-page technical and scientific reference work makes up the collection published as "La mine en France". It is available for public consultation on the Minéralinfo website and aims to provide technical and factual input to discussions on non-energy mining projects in mainland France and French Guiana.

The state-of-the-art review comprises a glossary and 12 standalone volumes describing, in particular, the implementation principles of a mining project (exploration, economic study, operations, closure and post-mining management), the different techniques used and the good practices required to avoid, reduce or offset mining impacts.

The BRGM on the Editorial Board for the "La mine en France" collection

The editorial board for the collection includes members from the Ministry of the Economy and Finance, the BRGM, INERIS and the Mines and Society network of excellence (Mines ParisTech, Mines Nancy, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie, Mines d'Alès).

The BRGM supports mining policy development by addressing every aspect of knowledge and management in the field of mineral raw materials, from research on processes and predictivity, explorations and assessments of reserves through to the economics of mineral and metal resources and expert studies for post-mining phases.
