BRGM, the French geological survey, is the French institution responsible for ground and sub-surface studies. It provides input for public policy-making to the government, local and regional authorities, target-setting agencies and other public bodies.

BRGM's public-policy support programme is drawn up on the basis of general objectives laid down by the French Public Services Steering Committee (CNO - Comité National d’Orientation), an umbrella organisation for BRGM's supervisory ministries, as well as ministries responsible for areas in which BRGM intervenes. They are also based on the institution's new scientific strategy, adopted at the end of 2024, and its 2023-2027 contract of objectives, resources and performance, signed with the French government. Lastly, they reflect the expectations expressed to BRGM's regional offices by local public-sector stakeholders.

Strategic objectives broken down into 6 scientific programmes

BRGM's public policy support objectives are broken down into the establishment's 6 scientific programmes, in line with its scientific challenges and operational organisation:

  • Understanding and modelling regional geological formations
  • Using the subsurface for the energy transition and decarbonisation
  • Ensuring a responsible supply of mineral resources
  • Managing ground and subsurface risks
  • Protecting groundwater resources
  • Transforming the geosciences through digital technology
