Over the last few years, BRGM, which regularly publishes information on the state of groundwater in France, has seen an enormous increase in the audience for this bulletin, thanks to the widespread awareness of the climate emergency, particularly following the summer droughts of 2022-2023.
The same is true of France Télévisions, whose viewers are very active in asking questions about water resources via their #OnVousRépond information service, particularly before and during the summer period when water-related issues become even more glaring.
How can we respond to public concerns about the state of France's aquifers, which now account for two-thirds of the country's drinking water supply? With this in mind, BRGM and France Télévisions have teamed up to offer a new dedicated feature as part of their Climate forecast programme, entitled the Météo de l'eau.
A weekly programme to answer questions from the public about aquifers
What is an aquifer? What is the groundwater situation in France? Why is it that after heavy rainfall, the aquifers are not necessarily full? What are the consequences of low groundwater levels? Does this affect the quality of the water?
The new explanatory programme launched by France Télévisions in partnership with BRGM will answer all these questions and many more.
At the same time, BRGM, the French institute tasked with research on ground and subsurface issues, will continue to publish its groundwater situation bulletin for France on its website and social networks. Previously a monthly bulletin, it will become a fortnightly one from June 2025. The colours of the map are also changing, to make it easier to read on digital and televised media.
The Journal Météo Climat is broadcast daily at 8.50pm on France 2, 6.50pm on France 3 and 10.50pm on franceinfo channel 27.
