Marc Ferracci, the French Minister for Industry and Energy, honoured BRGM and its subsidiary IRIS Instruments with a visit on the afternoon of 13 February 2025, as part of a trip devoted to the development of subsurface resources and uses.

Visit officially launches update of mineral resources inventory

“As far as we can remember”, this is the first visit by a Minister for Industry to BRGM for a very long time. It marks the government’s recognition of the strategic issues on which BRGM, the French geological survey, is working.

On this occasion, the Minister officially announced the launch of the national inventory of mineral resources, a task he deemed "essential" for ensuring "national sovereignty".  It is a strategic project to ensure the supply of critical mineral resources. The launch took place at BRGM's geotheque, which houses more than 50,000 metres of drill cores and numerous samples.

The first overall estimate of CO2 storage capacity in mainland France was also presented. The EVASTOCO2 study highlights the potential of the subsurface in decarbonising our economy.

Finally, BRGM Num, a new BRGM subsidiary, was launched. It will be responsible for digital activities with a high level of technological maturity: its mission is to exploit and market BRGM's data, skills and know-how while preserving its capability to respond to its own digital challenges.

The visit ended at the premises of IRIS Instruments, with Catherine Truffert, Chair of the BRGM subsidiary.
