Several fields of Earth and environmental sciences are currently facing serious challenges and criticism on the international stage. BRGM firmly opposes these initiatives, as science is the foundation of expertise and a prerequisite for a mature democracy.
BRGM is a national scientific institution that also serves as the French Geological Survey. It conducts multidisciplinary research on the ground and subsurface and supports the French ministers for defining and implementing French public policies in these domains.
Informing public opinion and guiding political decisions for efficiently facing major environmental challenges is part of our mission.
Beyond the upgrading of subsurface knowledge, we serve society in the areas of:
- the anticipation and prevention of natural hazards,
- the efficient management of groundwaters in the context of climate change,
- the securitisation of the responsible supply of mineral resources,
- the development of geoenergies and CO2 geological storage.
Providing a secure, stimulating environment for research, expertise and innovation
As the French National Geological Survey, BRGM supports the Stand up for Science! movement.
In this context, and in line with the French government's “Choose France for Science” initiative launched by President Macron on April 18th, 2025, BRGM is launching a new hosting initiative, “Choose BRGM for Science!”, dedicated to scientists hampered by political measures who wish to pursue applied research in France and on BRGM’s key areas, within a secure, stimulating environment that combines research, expertise, and innovation.
As a major player in soil and subsurface research, BRGM offers a centre of scientific excellence, based in Orléans, near Paris, modern and well-equipped laboratories and experimental platforms, large-scale international collaborations, and strong support for scientists committed to addressing future challenges.
