The government Decree of 8 September 2025 amended the composition of the National Water Committee (Comité national de l’eau - CNE) to include a representative from BRGM, alongside other major players such as CNRS, INRAE and the Banque des Territoires.
This decision marks an important development in the approach to the governance of water resources in France, by bringing in key new players to represent a broader spectrum of stakeholders. It reinforces the emphasis on scientific and technical expertise in the committee's work, while acknowledging BRGM's central role in developing a knowledge base for the sustainable management of water resources.
A consultative national committee to debate and orient water policy guidelines
The National Water Committee acts as an advisory body to the French Ministry for Ecological Transition, and contributes to establishing and implementing policies for the management of water resources and aquatic environments.
As part of the committee, BRGM will contribute its expertise and knowledge in the field of groundwater and aquifer dynamics. As a result, the French National Geological Survey will be directly involved in strategic discussions on resource planning, pollution prevention, adaptation to climate change and consultation between the various users of the country's water resources.
The current members' mandates on the CNE will run until the official appointment of the new representatives.
