On 6 June 2025, during Brazilian President Lula's visit to France, the SGB and BRGM Geological Surveys signed a cooperation agreement.

This agreement aims to facilitate knowledge exchange and the development of scientific and technical capabilities within both organisations, as well as joint projects in the field of geosciences. The ultimate goal is to address the challenges of energy and environmental transition: critical metals, hydrogen, geological storage of CO2, etc.

A milestone for Franco-Brazilian cooperation in geosciences

Already long-standing, with joint geological work on the border between French Guiana and Brazil, cooperation between the two organisations could take various forms:

  • visits by experts and scientists,
  • exchange of scientific and technical information, including various geological samples and standards,
  • consolidation of capabilities and development of skills,
  • development of cooperative research in line with the partners' current programmes,
  • joint organisation of seminars, symposiums, conferences and workshops,
  • authoring of joint publications.
