Protecting people and their environment

The Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, held in Sendai (Japan) in 2015, set out a series of disaster reduction priorities in order to protect people and their living environment.

This commitment takes on particular significance in the context of climate change, which will affect the frequency and scale of natural disasters, with rising sea levels, more intense heat waves, more violent cyclonic phenomena, etc.

Today, the challenges that the Earth-sciences sector, and notably BRGM, must rise to are no longer just scientific but societal, with four priorities for action:

  • Understanding disaster risk;
  • Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk;
  • Investing in disaster risk reduction for resilience;
  • Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response and to “Build Back Better” in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
