Climate change will impact the world in numerous ways, due to the significant increase in the average surface temperatures of land masses and oceans. In view of these impacts, which are already testing and putting pressure on our societies, we have a responsibility towards future generations to take action now.
Adapting to climate change, a truly vital need
Although climate-change mitigation, based on reducing or even eventually eliminating greenhouse gas emissions, remains essential and drives policies to decarbonise our energy systems, the question of adaptation is just as vital, since it will enable humankind to limit and sometimes even prevent the most damaging consequences that are expected in the decades to come.
Adapting to climate change means learning more about its consequences. This issue of BRGM's Géosciences journal takes stock of the research being conducted in this field and the solutions that are emerging.
Moreover, BRGM is a key player in this field, providing expertise to support decision-making by the State and local authorities, notably concerning the issues of coastal erosion, monitoring aquifers and understanding clay soils.
BRGM's Géosciences journal
BRGM’s journal is written for an informed but not exclusively scientific readership. Géosciences is a six-monthly scientific and technical journal, which was launched in 2005. It addresses various topics of research and how scientific data is used to support decision-making concerning public policies and the development of industrial technologies, in France, in Europe and around the world.
The editorial content deals with major geoscience issues, such as water, natural hazards, urban geology, geology and health, the protection of natural environments and heritage, mineral resources, polluted soils and waste, and climate change.
The scientific content is systematically discussed within a societal context. Authors may, for example, address legal, economic, geopolitical, social or environmental issues as well as the geoscientific aspects of their topic.
