The challenge: 36 hours to invent the future of energy transition
TInnov is BRGM's annual open innovation event, where creativity and collaboration take centre stage.
Like a big hackathon, participants with different profiles brainstorm to come up with solutions to subsurface challenges on a specific theme each year.
This 8th edition had a new format, with a majority of student participants and 2 full days to co-construct innovative concepts alongside experts, researchers and manufacturers.

Thematic immersion: meeting the new subsurface energy challenges
As the energy transition gathers pace, the subsurface is emerging as a promising terrain for sustainable, high-performance solutions.
TInnov is a genuine invitation to explore and co-design new approaches to reveal the full energy potential of the subsurface and optimise its emerging uses.
From native hydrogen to storage solutions, geothermal energy and the optimisation of energy systems, each challenge identified opens the way to decisive advances.
How can we make the hydrogen sector more efficient and resilient? How can the subsurface be transformed so that it plays a key energy storage and management role? What new synergies can be created between the surface and subsurface to meet the growing needs of urban and industrial areas?
Undergraduates, doctoral students, companies, researchers and engineers pooled their skills to form 6 groups ready to take on the major energy challenges of the subsurface.
Guided by experts, the participants came to grips with the context and the issues involved.

From ideas to innovation
This was followed by brainstorming sessions, during which participants unleashed their creativity to generate as many ideas as possible.
Over 200 ideas were put forward
The experts helped the groups to prioritise and formalise all their ideas using co-design tools and methods.
Each team considered every stage of the innovation model: value proposition, business model, uses, risks and stakeholder involvement.
A prototyping area allowed ideas to be taken further through physical mock-ups or digital models.

6 concepts to keep an eye on
The groups finished the challenge by pitching in favour of their solution.
Each group had 7 minutes to convince all the participants and members of the jury of the relevance of their concept.
- Condens'Hy was the winning concept of this edition: betting on the recovery and treatment of air conditioning condensates to produce green hydrogen.
- Taking second place, the TInnovMetro concept proposed recycling the metro's waste heat into energy and to improve user comfort.
- In third place the Scoops Energy concept aimed to store energy as compressed CO2 in saline cavities, a solution 3x more efficient than conventional systems.
Not forgetting: Seasmoz, Solved H2 and Terrascopus.
