BRGM's expertise at the service of responsible mining management in Africa
Faced with the environmental, social and geopolitical challenges posed by subsurface resources, the question is no longer just how to exploit them, but how to exploit them better.
Against a backdrop of ever-increasing global demand for raw materials, particularly those that are critical to the energy transition, Investing in African Mining Indaba, the international conference on mining investment in Africa, brings together governments, investors, mining companies, geological surveys and international institutions to discuss the future of the African mining sector.
Supporting responsible and sustainable mining
BRGM presents its scientific and technical expertise in the service of responsible mine management. We support governments and players in the sector in a number of key areas by:
- providing input for public policies relating to mineral resources,
- reinforcing the capabilities of national geological surveys,
- developing national strategies for critical raw materials,
- limiting environmental impacts during exploration and production phases,
- developing innovative technical solutions with low environmental impact.
The aim is to enable producing countries to make sustainable use of their resources, while controlling their environmental impact and strengthening their sovereignty.
Innovating to reduce the environmental footprint
The mining Indaba is also an opportunity for BRGM to showcase its research and development solutions in the mining sector.
These include bioleaching, a technology that improves metal recovery while reducing the environmental footprint of mining operations.
Through its commitment to providing scientific and technical support through partnerships, BRGM is helping to move industry practices towards more sustainable models, by reconciling economic performance, environmental protection and the creation of value for local communities.

Training and structuring mining know-how: the PanAfGeo+ example
Responsible mine management relies in particular on the competence of national institutions. In this respect, the PanAfGeo programme is a major initiative coordinated by BRGM from 2016 to 2024, in partnership with the African Union and the European Union.
This programme has made it possible to:
- train nearly 1,750 geoscientists from 54 African countries,
- organise 72 training sessions in 22 host countries,
- increase knowledge of mineral resources, environmental management of mines, natural hazards and governance of geoscientific data.
Following on from this, the PanAfGeo+ programme (2025-2029) now aims to take things to the next level.
In addition to strengthening the capabilities of African geological surveys, the aim is to develop a genuine network of partners in Europe and Africa, by promoting direct contact between investors, industrialists and mining project developers in Africa.
This approach responds to a key challenge: that of creating the right conditions for practical projects to emerge, by facilitating dialogue between those who have the resources and projects, and those who can provide funding, technology and know-how. PanAfGeo+ thus acts as a catalyst, helping to structure a European-African collaborative ecosystem between industrialists and investors.
