Challenges and needs

In an overall context of acknowledging mutual interests between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and France, BRGM signed a framework partnership agreement with the Congolese national geological survey (SGN-C) in 2023.

This framework agreement provides for full deployment of the Geological and Mining Information System, and the joint development of research and exploration concerning critical metals with a view to developing mining projects. It should also help the DRC train its managers so that it has the skills and know-how to make the most of its many resources to support its development while at the same time preserving its environment.

On 12 June 2025, at Lubumbashi in the DRC, BRGM and the National Geological Service of the Republic of Congo (SGN-C) officially launched the project to develop and train staff of the National Geoscientific Data Bank of the DRC, with Didier Larroque, chargé d'affaires at the French Embassy, representing the Ambassador.

Expected results

This project, financed by France through the Fonds Equipe France (FEF), aims to develop a sustainable digital solution for managing and disseminating Congolese ground and subsurface data, while training SGN-C staff in its use, from acquisition in the field to management in the BNDG.

Training courses will be given in Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and Kolwezi for SGN-C staff in conjunction with the provincial universities (UNIKIN, UNILU and UNIKOL), with the emphasis on an inclusive approach to enrolling students.

This two-year project will run from 2025 to 2026.
