National activities

BRGM, alongside its industrial and scientific partners, is committed to acquiring the necessary skills and competence to operate, in the near future, a semi-industrial pilot for CO2 storage in France.
The various technical problems associated with this goal are studied as part of different projects.

Géocarbone - PICOREF (2005-2007)

PICOREF is devoted to preparing and running by 2009 a semi-industrial CO2 injection and storage pilot. The project will examine two site possibilities in the southeast of the Paris Basin: a mature hydrocarbon reservoir and a deep saline aquifer. Coordinated by IFP and sponsored firstly by RTPG (Network of Oil and Gas Technologies) and then by ANR (French Research Agency: GéoCarbone programme of the first ANR call for projects).
BRGM's main input: coordination of research for a storage pilot in a deep Trias-Dogger aquifer.

Géocarbone - INJECTIVITY (2006-2007)

The aim is to develop a methodology to understand and predict the evolution of CO2 injectivity in wells during the entire storage period in deep saline aquifers or hydrocarbon reservoirs.
Sponsored by ANR (French Research Agency) and coordinated by IFP

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Géocarbone - INTEGRITY (2006-2008)

The aim is to develop a methodology to assess the integrity of a CO2 storage operation through the modelling of confined CO2.
Sponsored by ANR (French Research Agency) and coordinated by IFP

Géocarbone-MONITORING (2006-2007)

This project investigates the safety and security issues of the storage installations as well as quantitative aspects concerning material balance, which is basically the relationship between the effective CO2 stored and any possible leakage into the atmosphere. Considering the large number of projects ongoing in Europe and the world, research is focused on identified gaps.
The project will result in a handbook of good practice that will support the drawing up of future French legislation.
Sponsored by ANR (French Research Agency) and coordinated by BRGM

METSTOR (2006-2007)

The purpose of this project is to design a decision-aid tool, based on technical, scientific and socio-economic data, to help identify integrated technical solutions for CO2 storage in geological formations in France (on- and off-shore).

THESIS (2006-2008)

BRGM-TOTAL industrially funded research partnership: thesis co-financed by the Région Centre and hosted by BRGM and ISTO (Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orléans) entitled "Natural CO2 migration in the Southeast Basin of France: contribution to the geological storage of CO2 in sedimentary reservoirs".  Work will initially focus on the natural CO2 deposit of Montmiral (Drôme), studied as part of the NASCENT project. The scope will then be extended to consider the overall conditions of CO2 migration throughout the southeastern carbogaseous province of France, an area famous for its carbonated mineral waters. Industrial support will enable fieldwork including the geochemical, mineralogical and isotopic characterization of fluids and rocks, the search for indications of gas flows at the surface by monitoring soil gas, and structural analysis. Seismic reprocessing is planned to better constrain the structure of the study area.

ACI INSU-CNRS (2003-2006)

"Geological sequestration of CO2": Structured action of the French research sector as part of the national ACI-CNRS programme "Natural risks and climate change", coordinated by IPGP (Institute of Earth Physics of Paris) and involving 14 research laboratories.
BRGM's main input: Evaluation of the potential of in- and ex-situ mineral sequestration in France.

PICOR (2002-2005)

“Trapping CO2 in reservoirs” a project funded by RTPG (the Oil and Gas Technologies Network) devoted to the trapping of CO2 in hydrocarbon reservoirs. The aim is to study the behaviour triggered by injecting large amounts of CO2 into reservoirs.
BRGM's main input: thermodynamics and kinetics of water/rock/gas systems, geochemical modelling, coupled geochemistry/hydrodynamic transport modelling. Applications to experimental and in-situ tests.
