WASTE MANAGEMENT

The "Waste Management" unit is dedicated to finding solutions that conform to the objectives of sustainable development in matters of waste management. It is notably involved in:

  • optimizing waste management (municipal solid waste and similar products, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), used tyres, industrial waste, etc.),
  • characterizing the environmental behaviour of waste (bottom ash, municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash, sludge, etc.) and predicting its impact (emission of pollutants from the waste, migration and fate of pollutants in the soil and groundwater),
  • underground waste storage (design of engineered landfills, dimensioning waste facilities, inventory and rehabilitation of former sites, behaviour of containment barriers, biogas management, etc.),
  • controlling the impact of waste elimination and processing plants (greenhouse gases, leachates, dioxins, etc.).

The unit's production activity:

  • research projects in partnership with industry and cofinanced by different organizations (ADEME, ANR, AFSSET, European Commission, etc.),
  • public service missions: technical advices for French laws and regulations, participation in French and European standardization commissions, writing up methodology guides, compiling databases (such as former landfill sites), third-party expertise,
  • international projects, notably as regards institutional twinning with East European countries ( Romania , Hungary , Czech Republic , etc.) and for waste management in emerging economy countries (e.g. India ).
